Can I work from Bali? Half the people in any Canggu coworking space asked that before they landed, and most got a vague answer from a friend. Here is the straight one. Yes, you can work from Bali legally in 2026. No, you cannot do it on a tourist visa, not even for clients on the other side of the world. The gap between those two sentences is where people get deported.
We run EX EPIC Academy out of Canggu, with people from 26 nations shipping work on 15 live projects. Every one of them had to face this question before packing a bag. So this is not a lifestyle post. It is the rulebook, the real penalties, and the routes that actually hold up. It is not legal advice, and the rules move, so verify before you apply.
The short answer: where your body is, not where your money is
Most people assume remote means invisible. The employer is in London, the salary lands in a US bank, so why would Indonesia care?
It cares a lot. As the Honeycombers visa guide puts it, Indonesian immigration counts work by where you physically are, not where the money comes from. Professional work done while you stand in Bali counts as work in Bali, even for an overseas client.
That flips the question. It is not "can I work from here?" It is "which permit am I on, and does it allow what I am doing today?"
What each visa lets you do

The C1 costs Rp1,000,000 and gives 60 days on arrival, extendable twice to 180 days in total, per Honeycombers. The C2 costs Rp2,000,000, needs an invitation letter from a company or government body, and carries the same hard limit: no paid work or income from anyone in Indonesia.
Why "everyone does it" stopped being a plan
For years the Bali nomad economy ran on a wink. Laptop, flat white, rolling tourist visa. That era is closing fast.
- A dedicated patrol. Explore Canggu reports that the Dharma Dewata Immigration Patrol Task Force, set up in April 2026, targets foreigners doing commercial freelance work, teaching yoga or fitness, producing commercial media, or running businesses without the right permit.
- Coworking checks. IAN Nomad notes random immigration checks at coworking spaces in Canggu and Ubud during 2026.
- Your own Instagram. Honeycombers says immigration now checks social media for "working from Bali" posts and coworking tags.
What getting caught actually costs
The law behind it is Article 122 of Immigration Law No. 6 of 2011. Misusing a stay permit carries up to 5 years in prison and/or a fine of up to IDR 500,000,000, roughly $31,000, according to Explore Canggu. In practice the common outcome is detention, deportation at your own expense, and a blacklist. Honeycombers puts the usual ban at six months to two years.
Proof over panic: nobody is raiding villas over one Slack reply on holiday. But "technically grey" is a terrible foundation for a six month life plan. And if you came to Bali to build a career, a deportation record is the one line you never want on it.
The legal way: the E33G remote worker visa
The E33G exists for exactly this. It lets you live in Indonesia while carrying out duties for a company based outside Indonesia.
Who qualifies
Per Honeycombers:
- Income of at least USD 60,000 a year, plus a work contract with a company established outside Indonesia
- Three months of bank statements showing at least USD 2,000
- A passport with at least six months of validity, a recent photo, a CV and a travel itinerary
The Emerhub guide adds international health insurance, and is explicit that ordinary travel insurance does not count.
Cost and timeline
Honeycombers lists IDR 7,000,000 in total and five working days of processing after payment, applied for online through the official eVisa portal. Once the visa is issued you must enter Indonesia within 90 days or it lapses. Agencies charge on top: The Bali Lawyer puts the all-in figure at around USD 1,100 to 1,600.

The one rule that breaks it
Zero Indonesian income. Emerhub gives the example that makes it click: a freelance designer with only overseas clients breaks the permit the moment a Bali hotel hires them, even if the hotel pays in dollars. The Bali Lawyer says it more bluntly: the visa covers where you sit, not who you bill.
That includes the things that feel like side quests. A sponsored post for a local cafe. Running a retreat. Managing your villa's bookings. PT Asiah Legal Jaya warns that answering guests, pricing rooms and supervising local staff are local business activity even when done from a laptop.
Where the sources disagree
The guides do not all match, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Emerhub describes the E33G as one year and non-extendable. PT Asiah Legal Jaya, reading the official immigration page as of 11 August 2026, says the stay can be extended online. Check the official eVisa site the week you apply, not a blog from last year. What if you earn under $60,000 or want a local job?
This is the part most digital nomad visa posts skip. The income floor rules out a lot of students, fresh grads and early freelancers. That does not make the tourist visa fine. It means you pick a different route.

The builder's checklist before you book
- Name the visa. Write down which permit you will hold and what it allows. If you cannot, stop there.
- Map your income. List every client and employer. One Indonesian source changes everything.
- Ask the program. If an internship, bootcamp or "job" in Bali cannot tell you in writing which visa you will be on, that is your answer.
- Clean up your socials. Do not advertise Bali services while on a visitor visa.

Can I do visa runs to keep working from Bali on a tourist visa?
It does not fix anything, because each new tourist visa carries the same ban on work. Explore Canggu calls relying on rolling tourist visas a high-risk strategy that is increasingly monitored in 2026. If you qualify, the E33G ends the visa runs.
Can freelancers get the E33G?
Maybe. The requirement names an employment contract with a foreign company. Emerhub says the freelancer position is unsettled: some agencies file on client contracts, others insist on an employment contract, and immigration has published no clear answer. Get your documents reviewed before you apply.
Do I pay Indonesian tax if I work remotely from Bali?
Possibly. Tax residency starts after 183 days of presence in any 12-month period under Article 2 of Income Tax Law No. 36 of 2008, per Taxes for Expats. PT Asiah Legal Jaya adds that under PER-23/PJ/2025 a stay permit valid for more than 183 days can itself show intent to reside. Some qualifying foreign experts can exclude foreign income for up to four tax years under PMK 18/PMK.03/2021. Talk to a tax advisor.
Can I bring my family on the E33G?
Yes. Emerhub confirms the E33G lets eligible family members live with you, allows multiple entry, and needs no Indonesian sponsor.
